چکیده

THE INVESTIGATION described in this article was partially motivated bya desire to focus attention on certain perceived deficiencies in computerassisted-instruction (CAl) research. One emphasis in CAl research in 1969 was on exploring and discovering new ways in which humans and computers could interact. It involved the design of special hardware and the implementation of new programming techniques (software). The reader is referred to Wexler (1970) for a brief account of the historical development of CAL In his account, one can clearly see that the primary emphasis in CAl research projects had been system development. Most of tbe projects were implemented under ideal operating conditions for small and highly motivated groups of students, while .little or no attention was given to evaluating the curriculum or the pedagogical methods used. Usually, the system was designed to simulate some intuitive concept of a "good teacher" and to "individualize instruction." The result was a large collection of complex, interesting, and, from a computer scientist's point of view, valuable instructional systems. However, little machinery was available to judge their educational value or relevance in any systematic or quantitative way. For several years, the CAl Laboratory at the Institute for Mathematical Studies in the Social Sciences (IMSSS) had been offering a course in mathematical logic. The availability of this course made it possible to collect information on student behavior in elementary mathematical logic, information which was unavailable before the advent of CAL This study was a first attempt at an in-depth analysis of some of the factors which contribute to problem difficulty in elementary mathematical logic. The major focus of the study was to develop an understanding which might eventually lead to a quantitative theory of problem solving in logic. This work was in the spirit

An Investigation of Student Expectation, Perceived Performance and Satisfaction of E-textbooks

This paper examines the use of e-textbooks in a college level introductory information systems course using an empirical study that gave students the option to buy electronic or print versions of the same textbook. The study measured and analyzed student expectations prior to purchase, perceived performance and satisfaction after use, intention to use e-textbooks in the future and the determina...

Tuition Hikes and Student Performance

This paper develops a simple time-allocation model to examine the relationship between college tuition and students’ performance at college studies. We find that an increase in tuition lowers performance. Further, it is found that an increase in the wage rate lowers performance (since it results in an increase in the hours spent working). Our model thus (indirectly) provides theoretical support...

The impact of lifetime suicidality on academic performance in college freshmen.

BACKGROUND While suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) among college students are common, the associations between STB and academic performance are not well understood. METHODS As part of the World Mental Health Surveys International College Student project, web-based self-reported STB of KU Leuven (Leuven, Belgium) incoming freshmen (N=4921; response rate=65.4%) was collected, as well as aca...

Experimental Investigation of Thermal Performance in an Advanced Solar Collector with Spiral Tube

This paper reports the thermal performance of a new cylindrical solar collector based on an experimental investigation with this difference that instead of the collector tube with absorbent coating, coil into a spiral copper tube is placed in the center of the collector. The spiral shape of the tube, heat transfer without disruption or increase the heat transfer area, is increasing. In this cas...

An Investigation of Psychometric Measures for Modelling Academic Performance in Tertiary Education

Increasing college participation rates, and a more diverse student population, is posing a challenge for colleges in facilitating all learners achieve their potential. This paper reports on a study to investigate the usefulness of data mining techniques in the analysis of factors deemed to be significant to academic performance in first year of college. Measures used include data typically avai...

Changing Distributions: How Online College Classes Alter Student and Professor Performance

Online college courses are a rapidly expanding feature of higher education, yet little research identifies their effects. Using an instrumental variables approach and data from DeVry University, this study finds that, on average, online course-taking reduces student learning by onethird to one-quarter of a standard deviation compared to conventional in-person classes. Taking a course online als...
